I would very much like to see someone put forth a plausible mechanism whereby Boeing could produce the 787 by SCRUM.

Tobias, Agile will be THE approach to solving many diverse complex problems cutting across all industries. With the fast changing business environment unleashed by technology, communication and gobalization i always wondered how can a square peg approach fit into a round hole problem. The values in self organization will unleash power of creativity through unconstrained thinking and behaviour on the part of the team.the question is how long will heavy organizations built on command and control take to be persuaded and convinced to accept Agile as not an option but compulsion for win win.

Tobias, your comment regarding Scrum being a 'naturally evolving way of thinking and behaving' is so true of the Agile methodologies. As we learn from experience we are continually discovering better practices to increase efficiencies.

We can only hope that the dinosaurs you refer to learn to be more open to change.

Regards,
David

Very interesting article, Tobias. I'm curious as to the extent of resources available in this cutting edge field of innovative development that would help guide a large company through such an enormous shift in how they function. As the article states, the mechanical, hierachical systems currently in place are "lumbering dinosaurs", and dinosaurs are not easily displaced. Are there standardized Scrum-certifying bodies (thinking along the lines of ISO, ITIL, etc.) that could help drive such a change? Or perhaps it is not practical to expect an entire organization could subscribe to this framework, but rather utilize it only in those areas best suited. I would be interested in seeing Best Practices in larger companies that have implemented this approach to development.

Wonderful article. As I been traversing the agile world and learning new business techniques that are being applied elsewhere in my company I can totally relate to what Tobias is writing.

It's important to understand and promote that agile is not simply a "new" methodology, but rather it's a true paradigm shift that for it to be truly successful it needs to change not only development teams but organizations as a whole.

It's challenging and rewarding to be part of this.

Thanks for sharing this with us - In my way of thinking about Scrum it was always clear that Scrum is THE mindset that is able to deal with complexity for team. So Scrum is a framework to "controlchaos" as Ken Schwabers website it said 10 years ago.

I strongly believe we are all observers of a real paradigm shift.

Hi ,

As a software developer , I am not working in a company that accepted Agile philosophies. But I am able to read and try to learn about the philosophy(ies) around. The way that they described the human communication and collaboration is really amazed me. The plexus story link also contains a great sentence from Albert Einstein , that I would like to paste here.

"The significant problems we have cannot be solved at the same level of thinking with which we created them." Albert Einstein

I really appreciate for this post, help me to enlighten more.
